The baseball season ends soon

Labor Day weekend, 1920: the Pine Bluff White Sox against the Little Rock All Star, today and tomorrow at Athletic Field, 3:30. The ad closes with six words that do more work than any exclamation point ever printed: The baseball season ends soon.
The Pine Bluff Daily Graphic of Sunday, September 5, 1920 boxed off a corner of its sports page for the holiday program. “BASE BALL. TODAY AND LABOR DAY. ATHLETIC FIELD. 3:30 P.M. PINE BLUFF WHITE SOX vs. LITTLE ROCK ALL STAR.”
Two games, two days, hometown club against the visitors from up the road. Most ads would stop there, or reach for a superlative. This one reaches for the calendar: “The baseball season ends soon.”
That is the whole close. No prices, no promises, no world famous anybody. Just a gentle reminder that the afternoons are numbered and you can sit at Athletic Field watching the White Sox or you can explain to yourself all winter why you didn’t. It may be the most honest piece of salesmanship on this site. The season always ends soon.
