Base Ball! To-Day! Ladies' Day. Savannah vs Charleston
Savannah Morning News, 1904. View the original
The Savannah Morning News for July 29, 1904, in fourteen words and three prices: Base Ball! To-Day! Ladies' Day. Savannah vs Charleston, ladies to grounds and grand stand free, admission a quarter, box seats 75 cents.
Some ads argue. This one, from the Savannah Morning News of July 29, 1904, just announces, one exclamation at a time: “BASE BALL! TO-DAY! LADIES’ DAY. Savannah vs Charleston.”
The fine print is generous where it counts. “LADIES TO GROUNDS AND GRAND STAND FREE.” Everyone else pays the going rates, stacked like a menu: “ADMISSION 25c. GRAND STAND 50c. BOX SEATS 75c.” Savannah against Charleston was the South Atlantic League’s oldest argument, two port cities a hundred miles apart with opinions about each other, and on this particular Friday the management wanted the stands full and knew how to do it.
The whole thing runs maybe forty words, most of them prices, and it did everything a modern promotions department does with a week of social media. Game today. Rivals in town. Ladies free. Bring a quarter.
