Walnut Ridge backed out of the Fourth of July game too late for Yellville to book anybody else, so the Mountain Echo printed the only explanation that made sense to them.

Yellville had a game lined up for the Fourth of July, 1905, until the Walnut Ridge team “flunked on the local team” too late to find a replacement. No game on the biggest baseball day of the year.

The Echo’s postmortem is five words of perfect small-town scorn: Guess they got “afeard.” The quotation marks are the paper’s own, which somehow makes it worse for Walnut Ridge.
