Six lines in the Omaha Daily Bee of May 4, 1922: “Base Ball Today. THURSDAY, MAY 4. OMAHA vs. WICHITA. Game called at 3:45 p. m. Children free—Ladies 10 cents. Tickets for sale at United Cigar Store, 16th and Farnam.”
That’s the entire pitch. No stars promised, no fireworks, no doubleheader. A Thursday afternoon, a 3:45 first pitch and a price structure that tells you exactly who the club wanted in the stands: children free, ladies a dime, everybody else presumably paying full freight and glad of it. Ball clubs courted the ladies for decades this way, and Topeka went even further in 1912, letting them in free five days a week.
The visitors are the Wichita club, whose nicknames were multiplying that very spring, Witches, Izzies and the freshly minted Isbergs. In fact this ad shares a page with that column, the Bee selling you the ticket and the gossip in one sitting. Buying your baseball ticket at a cigar store on the corner of 16th and Farnam is simply how it was done, and we see no reason it shouldn’t still be.
