The Holt County Sentinel put it on the front page in August 1889: the Oregon Azureines against the St. Joe Monarchs, the best amateur club in St. Joseph, at Base Ball Park. Admission 10 and 5 cents.
The Holt County Sentinel gave a chunk of its front page on August 9, 1889 to the biggest thing happening in Oregon, Missouri the next afternoon: “BASE BALL! OREGON ‘AZUREINES’ VS. ST. JOE ‘MONARCHS!’” at Base Ball Park, which is what the town called its base ball park.
The fine print respects the visitors. “This will be an interesting game, as the ‘Monarch’ B. B. C. is recognized as the best amateur club in St. Joseph. They will give the ‘Azureines’ a hard tussle.” Then the only instructions anyone needs: “Turn out and witness a good game. Game will be called at 4 o’clock P.M. sharp. Admission, 10 and 5 cents.”
The team name deserves a moment. Plenty of towns named their nine for what the town did all day. Oregon, Missouri went the other direction and picked Azureines, which sounds like something between a shade of blue and a patent medicine, and this desk sees no reason to say more.
